command-line recall in the shell line editor
NAME
history - command-line recall in the shell line editor
DESCRIPTION
The interactive shell remembers the commands you type and lets you recall
them with the arrow keys, like a Unix shell:
Up arrow recall the previous (older) command
Down arrow move back toward the most recent command
Tab autocomplete the word at the cursor (see below)
Backspace/DEL erase the last character
Ctrl-D end of input (EOF) on an empty line
A recalled line replaces what you were typing and is redrawn at the prompt;
you can then edit its end and press Enter to run it. Pressing Down past the
newest entry returns you to an empty line.
History is a ring of the last 8 command lines, kept in RAM. Blank lines are
not recorded, and a command identical to the one just before it is stored
only once (no consecutive duplicates). The ring is cleared at power-on / cold
start; it is not (yet) saved to disk between sessions.
History applies only to interactive typing. Lines read from a script by the
`sh` built-in are not added to the history.
AUTOCOMPLETE
Tab completes the word at the cursor. The first word (the command) completes
against the built-in command names and the programs in /bin; any later word
completes a filename against the directory it names -- the current directory,
or the path before its last '/'. So `ma<Tab>` -> `make `, `cd /b<Tab>` ->
`cd /bin/`, `cat RE<Tab>` -> the matching file.
With a single match the whole name is filled in, followed by a space (a file
or command) or a '/' (a directory). With several matches the longest common
prefix is filled; press Tab again to list the candidates and redraw the line.
NOTES
Arrow keys are received as ANSI escape sequences (ESC [ A / ESC [ B), so a
VT100-style terminal (or the emulator's raw console) is required; left/right
arrows are ignored (the editor edits at the end of the line only).
